Invitation to the Annual Conference of The Japanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies

The 69th Annual Conference Conference of the Japanese Association of Indian and Buddhist Studies will be held at Tōyō University. Details are given below. We hope that you will be able to attend and to present the results of your latest research.

Call for Panel Proposals

JAIBS Conference is pleased to accept, besides individual papers, panel proposals with a specific topic. Panels are organized by JAIBS members, are composed of a small number of panelists, and will be held on September 2, from 1:40 p.m. to 4:10 p.m.


Those who plan to organize a panel are kindly requested to fill out an application form specifying (1) the title of the panel, (2) an outline of the panel that illustrates its significance, (3) the name of the organizer and the panelists, and (4) the titles of their respective papers and their order of presentation. The application form can be downloaded from here.

After the panel, the organizer is requested to summarize the content of the panel within two pages, and this summary must reach the JAIBS office by October 15, 2018 in order to appear in JIBS vol. 67.

Results of the Planning and Editorial Committee:

Applicants will be informed of the results of the decision of the Planning and Editorial Committee by April 7, 2018 via e-mail.

Regarding the number of panels one can participate in:

Members may only be a panelist in one panel.

Time Allotment:

Time may be allotted to panelists according to the plan of the organizer of the panel, on the condition that five minutes per panelist is spared for questions and answers.

Duration of the panel and Number of Panelists:

Each panel may have 4 to 6 panelists, and should be able to conclude within 2.5 hours.

Panelists’ Qualification:

Panelists should be the members, ordinary or honorary, of JAIBS who have right to apply for reading a paper at the Conference. If needed, however, no more than two non-member panelists can be invited.


Presentations by non-member panelists may be given in a language other than Japanese or English. However, presentations made in foreign languages should be accompanied by a Japanese-language summary of approximately 800 characters. Presentation in foreign languages should be accompanied by a Japanese summary of approximately 800 characters. Questions and answers for this presentation should be carried out with the assistance of a Japanese interpreter.

Regarding Panelists’ Non-panel Papers:

All panelists are entitled to apply to read his or her individual paper in addition to their panel presentation at the same JAIBS Conference.
